                      Historic Cambridge

Explore the beautiful city of Cambridge from your base at Bedford Lodge Hotel & Spa, less than a 30-minute drive and just 15 miles away.

Historic Cambridge is brimming with things to see and do. The most quintessentially Cambridge activity of them all, punting along the River Cam. This tradition allows you to soak up the city’s beautiful architecture in style and comfort. Book a tour of The Backs for iconic sights such as King’s College Chapel and the Bridge of Sighs.

Cambridge is world famous for being a seat of learning and since the first college opened in 1209, the University of Cambridge has thrown its doors open to the visiting public. King’s College Chapel is celebrated for its choral services including the famous A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, broadcast live by the BBC to the nation and across the globe on Christmas Eve. If you have a chance to hear the sublime Choir of King’s College, you will be enchanted. Choral Evensong is sung here most days during term time, as it is in many other college chapels – all free and open to everyone. As well as the free-to-enter University of Cambridge’s Fitzwilliam Museum, which houses world-class collections of art and antiquities spanning centuries.

There is much more to Cambridge than just its university. Music fans are spoilt for choice with the city’s famous folk festival, big-name gigs at the Corn Exchange and more intimate concerts at the Junction.

Food and wine lovers can take part in the city’s renowned Food Tours; be led through the city by leading ‘foodies’ and discover the best speciality shops, famous Cambridge institutions and the ‘hidden city’ on a fun walking tour with a gastronomic twist. The Cambridge Wine School offers courses aimed at all levels of knowledge and taste to help promote the enjoyment of wine and there is Cambridge Gin Laboratory where you can  learn about the history and mysteries of ‘Mother’s Ruin’, with plenty of tasters as you go. As well as masterclasses led by gin experts, you can also try your hand at a mixology workshop, or even create your own gin from scratch. Don’t forget to grab a pint at the Eagle Pub, the birthplace of the discovery of DNA and haven for WW2 airmen.

Cambridge truly is a green city – the natural fen landscape flows right into the centre along the river Cam, cows grazing within sight of Kings College Chapel. You can picnic under the trees along The Backs and admire the stunning views or while away the hours in beautifully kept College grounds and Fellows gardens. Riverside parks, grassy commons, cool meadows and flower-filled gardens shape the city as much as its history and heritage. If it is green space you are looking for, don’t forget a trip to the Botanic Gardens.
