Why Lavender is a Must-Have Skincare Ingredient

Whenever I think of lavender, I immediately associate it with its relaxing and calming properties, especially when it comes to helping us drift into a peaceful sleep. However, the iconic purple plant also promotes a lot of skincare benefits besides from the soothing aroma!

Interestingly, the healing powers of Lavender were discovered by a French chemist in 1910 and since then lavender has been used as a tool for aiding skin recovery.

As a popular ingredient within skincare, Lavender Oil is a great multipurpose product and suited towards an array of skincare concerns.

Along with the anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antibacterial benefits found in botanical ingredients such as lavender, it is unique in its ability to boost blood circulation. This improved circulation allows oxygen to flow through the body more effectively and helps to improve organ function. Our skin is also left looking healthier and more supple which is what we all desire!

Lavender oil is non-comedogenic, which means it does not block our pores, making it especially beneficial for those that suffer from acne or pimples. With its antibacterial and antioxidant properties helping to fight bacteria, this means we aren’t reliant on harsh chemical-laden skincare to see results! Lavender also offers gentle moisturising elements for the skin, which is why it’s known as being so calming and healing and can even balance pH levels.

For those who enjoy a lovely soak at the end of a long week, I’d recommend using a few drops of Lavender essential oil in your next bath! Not only with the antioxidants help counter the daily stress of pollutants and toxins on the skin but can help nourish and hydrate too. A relaxing soak for around 20 minutes will leave you ready for some much-needed shut-eye…

At the Spa at Bedford Lodge Hotel, we love to harness the benefits of Lavender within our treatments. My favourite is our Lavender Poultice Massage which is designed to relax and calm the mind and body. Our therapists use warm herbal poultices to give heat to muscles and joints which will increase circulation before following with a purifying and rebalancing massage. A warm, soothing compress infused with lavender is then applied for an overall sense of wellbeing – complete zen!
