Many people find it difficult to get a proper night’s sleep during the warmer months, as they can often feel restless and uncomfortable in the heat. Whether the heat prevents you from falling asleep, or wakes you up frequently throughout the night, your quality of sleep can be significantly affected.
Here’s my advice on how to get a good night’s sleep now that summer is upon us:
1. Keep Your Bedroom Cool
Keep windows in your house open and where possible use fans to circulate the air and keep the room as cool as possible. If you do not have a fan, try filling your hot water bottle with ice cold liquid instead. During the day, draw the curtains or blinds to keep the sun out. Additionally, try not to use any electronics like laptops and phones that emit heat.
2. Choose Lightweight Bedding
Switching your bedding to sheets made from breathable, lightweight materials like cotton or linen can truly make a large difference due to allowing the air to circulate better. Additionally, opt for a thin top sheet instead of a heavy duvet.
3. Stay Hydrated
With the increased temperatures you are likely to feel more dehydrated so make sure you drink lots of water. This will prevent you from waking up in the middle of the night feeling thirsty.
Be careful about what other drinks you have. Drinking large amounts of alcohol will leave you feeling more dehydrated and will affect the quality and length of your sleep. Many soft drinks also contain caffeine which will keep you awake.
4. Relax with a Spa Treatment Before Bed
A relaxing spa treatment before bed can be help you unwind and feel tired. A massage helps to release tension and reduce aches, making it easier to fall and stay asleep. Our Evening Bliss Spa Package is great for anyone who wants to enjoy our spa facilities and a Relax & Revive Massage straight before bed.
5. Maintain a Consistent Sleep Schedule
Take some time to wind down before you go to bed. Activities like reading or taking a bath can help clear your mind and make it easier to fall asleep. Try to limit any physical activity in the 1-2 hours before bed as this prevents the body from relaxing. Most importantly, no napping! Hot weather can make us feel lethargic during the day, but having naps will prevent you from feeling tired in the evening.
